Kinect: New product, old ideas

Microsoft Kinect is a new product. Like any new piece of technology, it has generated some "oohs" and "aws" for its features.

So let's take a look at a couple of the things that Kinect does (in fact the only things it does).

Voice interaction with the console
This has been around for many years. Kinect doesn't even advance the technology using voice recognition, so that anyone in the room can say "Stop" and the movie will stop (i.e. it won't recognize that the logged-in user isn't saying that).

Which makes me wonder what happens when you watch a movie and a character yells "Stop"...

Controller-free motion gaming
Never been done before, you say? A revolution of gaming also?

In 1993, Sega released the "Activator" which ironically also uses the tagline "You are the controller" which Microsoft has now blatantly ripped off. Considered one of the worst gaming peripherals of all time, I have to wonder what has changed in the last 17 years to make people think that this is a good idea.

Open your eyes. Kinect is a new product but it is fundamentally flawed. Worse than bringing nothing new to the party, Kinect shows up more than a dozen years late.
